CNC Machines

While a computer numerical control (CNC) machine can be any machine that has its motion controlled by numeric code and could include machine like laser cutters and 3D printers, in this facility ‘CNC’ is used to refer to machines that perform subtractive operations to remove material, specifically routers and mills.

These machines can be used to cut a variety of stiff materials, such as wood, aluminum, steel, plastics, and rigid foam. All of our machines are capable of performing 3-axis motion.

There is no charge for use, but users are expected to prepare their own CAM file and provide the material to be cut. CNC Router Technical Assistants are available for consult and support at every stage of the process, including evaluating part design for machinability.

Like other areas of the Lab, access is limited to faculty and staff of the GSD, and students enrolled in courses offered at the GSD. Basic Health and Safety training is required for all Lab users.
