How To

Instruction

  1. Setting Up:
    • Place the object inside the cabinet on the work surface.
    • Adjust the position of the object to ensure full access to the areas to be blasted.
    • Close and latch the cabinet door securely.
    • Check that the cabinet door is securely closed and sealed.
  2. Operating the Cabinet:
    • Turn on the ventilation system to ensure proper airflow and lighting
    • Insert hands into the gloves and use the blasting gun to direct abrasive media at the object.
    • Turn on the abrasive blasting system by stepping on the pedal.
    • Move the object as needed to ensure all areas are properly blasted
  3. Finishing:
    • Turn-off the abrasive blasting system and the ventilation system.
    • Allow the dust to settle before opening the cabinet door (at least 2 minutes).
    • Remove the object and inspect it, repeat as needed.

Product List

Typically used to erode top surface of sheet materials, like acrylic, to created a frosted appearance.

If considering use for removal of paint from items not made at the GSD, consult with Lab Staff in advance. Paint and other finishes on items of this sort may contain heavy metals or other hazards.

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • None if cabinet is used as directed.

Engineering Controls

  • Ventilation and dust collection system to extract dust and abrasive particles
  • Proper lighting inside the cabinet for clear visibility
  • Safety interlocks to prevent the door from opening during operation
  • Pressure regulator to control the abrasive blasting pressure

Emergency Response

  • Injury: Seek immediate medical attention
  • Eye Injury: Seek immediate medical attention
  • Inhalation: Move to fresh air, seek medical attention if breathing difficulties occur

Storage

  • Not applicable.

Disposal

  • Lab Staff will routinely replace dispose of used blasting media.

Other Notes

  • Notify Woodshop Staff if there doesn’t appear to be any flow of media from the gun.
