Abrasive Cut Off Saw

Instruction

  1. Equipment Overview:
    • Point of Operation: The point of operation is on the main cutting surface and where the blade meets the material as it is swung down into it
    • Pinch/Nip points: Pinch points can occur between the blade and tables, the clamps/vise and tables, the vise and lock handles, and the safety guards and blade.
    • Unguarded rotating parts: The blade.
    • Flying chips/sparks: Sparks and dust are almost always forcefully ejected into the blade shield and to the back of the saw. The spark trail can be extreme and engage the user when making a cut
  2. Preparation:
    • Complete required orientations and sign into the metal shop log
    • Put on all required PPE
    • Inspect the abrasive disc for wear and proper installation
    • Secure the saw to the table and lock the vise
    • Ensure the work area is clear of any obstructions or hazards
    • Ensure blade is installed correctly, not overly worn or clogged, and proper for the material to be cut
    • Check that the spark guard is in place and properly adjusted
    • Ensure saw is clamped to the table and mounted correctly for use.
  3. Operation:
    • Position the material in the vise
    • Turn on the saw and wait for it to reach full speed
    • Lower the saw slowly to cut the material
    • Apply consistent pressure to ensure a smooth cut
    • Never apply force to the side of the blade
    • Monitor the cutting process to avoid overheating or binding
    • Always be careful of handling recently cut material as it can be extremely hot and will likely have a sharp burr from the cutting process
  4. Finishing:
    • Turn off the saw and wait for the disc to stop
    • Remove the material and inspect the cut edges
    • Clean the machine and surrounding area
    • Record the completion of your task in the metal shop log

  • All steel can be cut on the abrasive saw but softer metals, such as brass and aluminum cannot, they will clog the blade.
  • Carbide is too hard to be successfully cut on the abrasive saw.
