- Equipment Overview:
- Point of Operation: The point of operation is at the edge of the spinning disc as it encounters your material
- Pinch/Nip points: Pinch points can occur between the disc guard and disc, grinder body and disc, grinder body and disc guard
- Unguarded rotating parts: The mounted grinding disc
- Flying chips/sparks: Yes, when grinding steel the grinder will emit a stream of sparks and grinding dust
- Preparation:
- Complete required orientations and sign into the metal shop log
- Inspect the abrasive disc for correct installation
- Ensure the disc guard is in place and secure
- Verify that the work area is clear of any obstructions or hazards
- Ensure the power cord is in good condition and length
- Do not use the spring loaded hand clamps as they are typically weak and inadequate for use with this tool
- Operation:
- The angle grinder is used to grind, abrade, and cut through metal
- Ensure the abrasive disc is correct for the tool, material, and operation and is fastened securely to the grinder spindle
- Position the material securely
- Turn on the grinder and allow it to reach full speed and keep firm grip
- Grind using moderate pressure, directing sparks away from flammable materials
- Use a steady motion to maintain control and prevent gouging
- Adjust the guard and handle for optimal control and safety
- Finishing:
- Turn off the grinder and wait for the disc to stop before setting down
- Remove the material and inspect for smoothness and accuracy
- Clean the machine and surrounding area
