Bandsaw

Instruction

  1. What it does best:
    • Makes semi clean cuts in approved materials
  2. Allowed Materials:
    • Each bandsaw will have specific allowed materials. Refer to each saw’s posted SOP for details.
    • We are equipped to cut wood, foam, some plastics, and aluminum.
  3. Basic use:
    • The bandsaw is most commonly used to make freehand cuts but can be used with accessories like a fence, small vise, or cross cut gauge.
    • Before powering on the saw adjust the blade guard height to be slightly above the highest point on your workpiece. This will both improve how accurately you can cut and limit how much of the blade is exposed.
  4. Safety Reminders:
    • Dust collection setups vary between different bandsaws, familiarize yourself with the options and take advantage of them during use.
    • The material being cut must be in firm contact with the table before contacting the blade.
    • Wait for the blade to reach full speed before beginning to cut.
    • When cutting material do not position your hands inline with the blade, flank them to the side slightly to avoid a dangerous situation if they lunge forward unexpectedly.
    • All guards must be in place and positioned correctly before using the bandsaw
    • Minimum radius for curved cuts: 2.5”
    • When cutting curves make multiple straight relief cuts to alleviate possible binding of the blade when cutting the curve
    • Fingers must NEVER be within 3 inches of the blade. See TA for assistance in cutting small pieces that require control closer than that 2” distance.
    • Round stock thicker than 1” must be firmly clamped to flat bottomed stock before being cross cut.
    • It is never permissible to rip cut completely round stock of any size
    • Use extreme caution when backing out of a cut while the machine is running. Stop immediately if you see the material catch and pull the blade forwards.
  5. Finishing:
    • Turn off the bandsaw and wait for the blade to come to a complete stop
    • Remove the objects and clean the work area
