Hot Wire Foam Cutting EPS and XPS

How To

Video / Tutorial

Description

  1. Note: Taught nichrome wire is electrified with low-voltage. Resistance of the wire generates sufficient heat to melt the foam when it comes into contact with the wire. Adjust the device’s output power to keep the wire temperature at the minimum necessary to cut the foam; short pieces require less heat in the wire than tall pieces.
  2. Preparation:
    • Put on all required PPE
    • Turn on foam cutter to heat up
    • Ensure work area is well-ventilated
  3. Setting Up the Cut:
    • Measure and mark the cut lines on the foam using a marker or pencil
    • Position the foam on the cutting table or surface
  4. Cutting the Foam:
    • Guide the foam slowly and steadily through the hot wire, following the marked lines
    • Apply even pressure to ensure a smooth cut and avoid breaking wire
    • Use guides if necessary for precise cuts
  5. Finishing:
    • Turn off foam cutter
    • Clean work area

Product List

  • Dow STYROFOAM High Load 60 Extruded Foam Insulation (XPS)
  • Expanded Polystyrene Foam (EPS)

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Respiratory Protection: None is required if suitable engineering control is used. Wear a respirator with organic vapor and particulate pre-filter cartridges if discomfort or adverse effects are experienced
  • Eye Protection: Safety Glasses
  • Skin: heat resistant gloves may work to prevent burns from contact with hot wire or material

Engineering Controls

  • Local exhaust ventilation is required. Snorkel exhaust on Gund 3rd and 5th-floor north studio alcove is provided. Ensure that the end of the snorkel is located within 6 inches of the source of the contaminant, in this case, the top of the wire. Place the end of the snorkel so that it draws contaminants away from self and other individuals within the immediate area
  • Use of a fume extractor with activated charcoal and HEPA filters may be permissible; consult with Lab Staff

Emergency Response

  • Have SDS printed and available for materials used in case medical advice or emergency response is required
  • Eye Exposure: Flush with water for several minutes, removing contact lenses after 1-2 minutes. Consult with a physician if irritation persists, preferably an ophthalmologist. For burns, obtain immediate medical attention
  • Skin exposure: Wash or immerse with plenty of water. For serious burns, obtain immediate medical attention
  • Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water. Do not induce vomiting.
  • Inhalation: Move the person to fresh air and keep comfortable. If irritation persists, consult a physician

Storage

  • Keep the foam in well-ventilated spaces away from sources of heat, flame, and direct sunlight. Limit quantity stored in spaces

Disposal

  • Clean, white EPS may be recycled by special collection. Deposit in pink barrels or wire-frame receptacles. Any colored XPS or contaminated EPS must be disposed of in the landfill waste bin

Other Notes

  • Follow material and equipment manufacturers’ instructions and Safety Data Sheets.
