How To
Instruction
- What it does best:
- Flattens, thicknesses, and shapes solid wood.
- Allowed materials:
- Solid wood only.
- Construction lumber of any kind (2×4’s and similar) are not permitted on the jointer/planer without supervisor approval.
- Eligible material must be properly dried, free of excess/loose knots, and free of metal fasteners or other foreign materials.
- Varnished/painted/finished wood must be approved by the shop supervisor before being run on this machine.
- Limits on Stock Size:
- Face Jointing:
- Minimum thickness: 1/2”
- Minimum width: 2”
- Minimum length: 12”
- Edge Jointing:
- Minimum thickness: 3/8”
- Minimum height: 3”
- Minimum length: 12”
- Planing:
- Minimum thickness: 3/8”
- Minimum width: 1”
- Basic use:
- Choose which function of the machine is required and transform the machine correctly for your operation
- Read the grain of your stock to determine which direction you should feed it into the machine
- Adjust the fence, cut depths, and table heights as needed for the desired cut
- Open the blast gate, connect the dust collection hose to the correct port, and power on the dust collector before making any cuts on the machine.
- Make sure you can position the material firmly on the infeed table and that it is properly aligned before powering on the machine
- Turn on the jointer planer and feed the material through at a steady rate following all safety rules
- Ensure hands and fingers are kept clear of the cutterhead and dangerous pinch points at all times
- For heavy stock removal, check the dust collector bag halfway through to make sure the collector is not overloaded with chips
- Safety reminders:
- All guarding must be in place and working correctly before using the machine. The “porkchop” blade guard must be reciprocating smoothly.
- Only trained TA’s may use this machine without direct supervision
- Do not operate this machine without proper dust collection
- All face jointing operations must use proper push sticks
- Follow all rules regarding stock sizes
- When feeding material into the planer, maintain a strong hold on the material anytime you are standing directly behind it
- Never let your fingers get close the intersection of the stock and the planer table when feeding material in. This is a dangerous pinch point.
- Finishing:
- Turn off the machine after use
- Clean the area completely of any dust/debris
- Close the blast gate to the Jointer/planer and make sure the gate to the bandsaw is (re) opened
