Instruction

  1. Preparation:
    • Prepare your file and ensure file meets the laser cutter’s specifications
    • Reserve time slot using FabJob App
    • Verify that your material is on the approved material list
  2. Setup and Calibration:
    • Turn on machine
    • Place material in the laser cutter
    • Adjust the focus and
    • Assign settings as required for material type, thickness, and type of cut
    • Perform a test cut and adjust settings as needed (maximizing speed and minimizing power needed)
  3. Cutting:
    • Monitor the process, do not leave running laser cutter unattended
    • Let fumes vent out before opening lid to remove cut items
  4. Finishing:
    • Remove your materials
    • Clean-up the workspace and laser cutter. Vaccuum area as needed.
    • Log-out of any applications you may have logged-into.

  • Foam Core (Polystyrene Foam)
  • PVC (Polyvinychloride)
  • HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) [i.e. Milk Bottle Plastic]
  • ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)
  • Vinyl
  • Reflective Materials
  • MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard)
  • Masonite (Hardboard)
  • Plywood (greater than 1/8″)

Talk to Lab Staff before cutting

  • Corrugated Cardboard
  • Anything not listed above

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Not applicable

Engineering Controls

  • Easily accessible emergency stop buttons to quickly disable the laser and close the exhaust duct to suppress oxygen supply.
  • Fire extinguishers near the laser cutter.

Storage

  • Allow recently cut parts to off-gas in a well-ventilated space.

Disposal

  • Disposal bins for specific materials are marked and located in Gund L40 and throughout the GSD campus.
