Metal Shop Disk Sanders

Instruction

  1. Equipment Overview:
    • Point of Operation: All cutting action occurs on the main work table and at the point where the abrasive disc encounters the material being manually pushed into it.
    • Pinch/Nip points: Pinch points can occur between the disc and table, disc and shroud, disc and dust door, when moving/locking the work table, and when moving the machine on its casters
    • Unguarded rotating parts: The abrasive covered disc.
  2. Preparation:
    • Complete required orientations and sign into the metal shop log
    • Put on all required PPE
    • Inspect the sanding disc for wear and correct installation
    • Adjust the work table gap to no more than 1/8”
    • Check the work area for any obstructions or hazards
    • All material to be sanded should be inspected for inclusions, defects, or foreign matter
    • Make sure that the tavle and raising mechanisms are firmly secured and that the table is set at the correct angle to the disc and locked firmly in place. For the smaller sander make sure it is clamped to a table surface before powering it on
    • Change sanding disc to correct grit is correct for material, ask shop supervisor or TA to make the change
  3. Operation:
    • Position the material on the work table
    • Always work only on the side that has the force down towards the table. Both metal shop disc sanders spin clockwise
    • Turn on the sander and ensure proper contact with the disc
    • The material must be in contact with the table at all times while it is also in contact with the sanding disc
    • Sand using moderate pressure and keep material in contact with the table
    • Move the material steadily across the disc to avoid overheating
  4. Finishing:
    • Turn off the sander and wait for the disc to stop
    • Remove the material and clean the area
