Oil Finishes

Instruction

  1. Preparation:
    • Put on all required PPE
    • Ensure the wood surface is clean, dry, and free of dust
    • Sand the wood with progressively finer grits of sandpaper
    • Wipe off any sanding dust with a tack cloth
  2. Application:
    • Stir the oil finish thoroughlt
    • Apply a generous coat of oil using a clean, lint-free cloth or bush, following the grain of the wood
    • Allow the oil to penetrate the wood for 15-30 minutes
  3. Drying:
    • Allow the finish to dry completely (up to 24- 48 hours) depending on the product and environmental conditions
    • For deeper finish, apply additional coats, sanding lightly between coats with fine-grit sandpaper
    • Repeat as needed
  4. Finishing:
    • Clean up work area and properly store oil finishes

  • Eye Protection: Safety glasses
  • Body Coverings: Nitrile gloves

Engineering Controls

  • Use in a well-ventilated area or provide mechanical ventilation (in spray booth)

Emergency Response

  • Skin Contact: Wash with soap and water. Seek medical attention if irritation occurs
  • Eye Contact: Flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes, seek immediate medical attention
  • Inhalation: Move to fresh air, seek medical attention if breathing difficulties occur
  • Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting, rinse mouth, and seek immediate medical attention.

Storage

  • Store oil finishes in their original containers, tightly sealed
  • Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources
  • Label and place into designated yellow cabinets

Disposal

  • Do not pour oil finishes down the drain or into the ground.
  • Rags that have been soaked with oil should be fully dried in the spray booth before disposing as solid waste in the trash, or leave in a yellow oily rag can for staff to dispose-of.
