Sanding Machines

How To

Instruction

  1. What it does best:
    • Abrades allowed material
  2. Allowed materials:
    • All solid wood, most sheet goods (plywood, MDF, plexiglass), most plastics
    • Material must be free of fasteners or any metal parts.
    • Sanding paint/varnish requires supervisor approval.
    • No concrete, plaster, metal, or resin is allowed on the sanding machines
  3. Basic use:
    • Power on the dust collector or ask the shop TA to turn it on for you
    • Power on the sanding machine
    • Holding your material firmly against the sanding table, press it lightly into the sanding belt
    • Move it side to side as you sand to utilize the entire belt. Sand in short bursts if there is a lot of material to remove.
    • If you notice burning, or it seems to be taking longer than usual, alert the shop TA to change the sanding belt
  4. Safety reminders:
    • Never sand metal, concrete, or plaster on the sanding machines.
    • Never sand without first powering on the dust collector
    • Material must always be held firmly against the sanding table before engaging with the sanding belt. Do not “freehand” sand anything with these machines
    • When using the disc sander, always sand on the “downhill” side of the disc, and slightly away from the center of the disc.
    • If using the vertical belt sander and storing excess material on the disc sander table, be mindful when reaching for that material that your hand does not come in contact with the disc
    • If you notice a sanding belt tracking far to either side alert a shop TA to center it. If you see sparks from contact shut off the machine immediately and alert the shop TA
    • Fingers should always be at least 1-2” away from the sanding belt. Ask a TA/supervisor if you need to control your stock closer than that.
    • Never use the machine if the space between the table and belt is more than 1/8”. Alert a TA or supervisor to re-position the table to a safe distance.
    • Never orient something with a thin edge in a way that the edge could get caught in the small gap between the main worktable and sanding belt.
    • Only light pressure is required, do not push against the belt with excess force. It may take some time to sand your material.
  5. Finishing:
    • Turn off the sanding machine and wait for the belt to stop completely
    • Clean the surrounding area of any dust/debris
    • if no one else is using a sanding machine, turn off the dust collector or ask the shop TA to do it for you
