  1. Preparation:
    • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Sewing machines can be significantly different from one another.
    • Place the sewing machine on a stable surface and where you can be comfortably seated at it.
    • Verify the correct needle plate and foot is installed for the desired stitch type and material.
    • Plug in the machine and turn it on.
  2. Threading:
    • Choose an appropriate thread type and weight for the material
    • Wind the bobbin and place it in the bobbin case in the correct orientation
    • Thread the top thread through the machine according to the guide
  3. Needle and Fabric:
    • Insert the needle appropriate for your fabric with the eye of the needle oriented in the correct direction
    • Thread the needle
    • Place the fabric under the presser foot
    • Lower the presser foot
    • Adjust pressure foot pressure as necessary for material type and thickness
    • Lower the needle into the fabric by rotating the top of the handwheel towards you.
  4. Stitch Selection:
    • Choose the desired stitch type and length
  5. Sewing:
    • Press the foot pedal and guide the fabric through the machine. Speed is controlled by the foot pedal.
    • Guide the fabric under the presser foot, taking care to keep fingers away from the needle.
    • If necessary, pull fabric gently from behind the needle, but the feed dogs (and walking foot on some models) should do most of the work. Do not push fabric towards the needle.
    • Perform test stitches to check thread tension and stitch settings.
    • As the fabric is moving toward the needle, remove any pins that were used to align fabric pieces before they get to the presser foot.
  6. Finishing:
    • Raise the needle to the top position by rotating the top of the handwheel towards you.
    • Raise the presser foot
    • Remove the fabric and trim both the top and lower threads
    • Clean-up work area
    • Un-plug and put-away the sewing machine and any tools used.
