Spot Welder

Instruction

  1. Preparation:
    • Complete required orientations and sign into the metal shop log
    • Put on all required PPE
    • Inspect the welder components and ensure they are correctly installed
    • Verify that there are no flammable materials nearby
    • Set up the welding area with proper ventilation and safety barriers
    • Ensure the work area is clear of any obstructions or hazards
  2. Operation:
    • Ensure tips of the arms are not deformed and meet together when closed
    • Verify that your material is able to safely be spot welded
    • Position the material between the welder arms
    • Turn on the welder and apply pressure to create the weld
    • Release the pressure and inspect the weld
    • Adjust the settings as needed for different material thicknesses
    • Monitor the welding process to ensure consistent weld quality
  3. Finishing:
    • Turn off the welder and wait for the tips to cool
    • Always be careful of handling recently welded material as it can be extremely hot.
    • Remove the material and inspect the weld for strength and appearance
    • Clean the machine and surrounding area
    • Once tips are cooled carefully put away spot welder as you found it

Product List

  • Most types of steel can easily be joined in the spot welder but material that has been galvanized or otherwise coated can produce dangerous fumes and cannot be welded without extreme precaution being taken.
  • All material should be clean and oil/solvent free. It may be necessary to lightly sand or grind the surface of some steels to aid in the welding process.
  • If you are unsure of your material for any reason you must check with a supervisor or metal shop TA

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Eye Protection: Safety Glasses and Full Face Shield
  • Ear Protection: Hearing Protection Earmuffs
  • Body Coverings: Non-flammable clothing
  • Hand Coverings: Heavy leather gloves

Engineering Controls

  • Must be used under the welding fume hood in the metal shop
  • Proper lighting
  • Safety guards
  • Remove any loose clothing, accessories, and tie back any long hair
  • Remove any jewelry
  • Always be aware where the off switch and how to best access it if needed

Emergency Response

  • Eye Injury: Flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Fire: Use a fire extinguisher suitable for electrical fires and evacuate the area if necessary

Other Notes

  • Point of Operation: The point of operation is between the tips of the welder
  • Pinch/Nip points: Pinch points can occur between the tips of the tool
  • Unguarded rotating parts: None.
  • Flying chips/sparks: Extreme heat is generated when in use but no sparks are created if used correctly.
