Instruction
This SOP refers only to solvent-reduced dye products, such as TransTint, using water as the solvent. To use alcohol, a mix of alcohol and water, or to tint another substance with the dye, please fist consult with Lab Staff as additional application, engineering controls, storage, and disposal instructions will be required.
For prepared products similar to Minwax Wood Finish Semi-Transparent and Solid Color Stain (water-based), BEHR Fast-Drying Interior Stain, and General Finishes Dye Stain, follow the manufacturer’s instructions related to hand application of the product, the SOP for Paint can be referenced for other considerations related to PPE, Engineering Controls, Emergency Response, Storage, Disposal, and Other Notes

- Protect work surfaces with drop cloths or brown craft paper.
- Put on all required PPE.
- Mix only the amount needed, in a small container.

- If the grain has raised, rub with maroon steel wool (Scotch-Brite) as sandpaper may cut-through.
- Repeat process, as necessary.
- Can be coated with a finish, once dry.
- Finishing:
- Clean-up work area by disposing of contaminated materials appropriately.
- Properly store unused products.
- Wash hands after handling the material.
Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Eye Protection: Safety glasses
- Body Coverings: Nitrile gloves. Long-sleeve and an impervious apron may be recommended.
Engineering Controls
- Use in a well-ventilated space.
Emergency Response
- Eye Exposure: Wash thoroughly in eyewash station for at least 15 minutes.
- Skin Exposure: Wash all affected areas thoroughly with soap and water.
- Ingestion/ Inhalation: Seek immediate medical attention.

Disposal
- Pour unused mixed product in the yellow-topped white non-hazardous liquid waste barrel in Project Room (Gund L31).
- Into the mixing container, squeeze residual moisture from any contaminated materials (brushes, lint-free cloths, drop cloths, etc.). Dispose of the
- Contaminated materials that will not be reused can be disposed of solid waste, after free-flowing liquid has been expelled.
- Wash and rinse brushes and similar tools in a bucket of clean water. Pour contaminated water in the yellow-topped white non-hazardous liquid waste barrel in Project Room (Gund L31).
