3D Scanning is used to make digital models from real physical objects. A variety of technologies exist, some utilizing physical probes, others lasers or reflective decals. The technology that the Fabrication Lab has available allows both the shape of an object to be captured as well as color. Because this process relies upon light and reflection, objects with highly reflective surfaces or deeply textured surfaces are difficult to scan accurately. The size and static quality of an object will also affect its ability to be accurately captured by this technology.
Contact [email protected] to setup an appointment with a TA. The TAs are available to help you to learn how to use the equipment and software so that you can then be self-sufficient with the technology.
For use of the David SLS-2 Scanner or Artec Eva, time will need to be reserved in coordination with the 3D Scanning TA. After an initial meeting with the 3D Scanning TA, you can use the scanning equipment with limited supervision.
At the discretion of Lab staff, individuals wishing to borrow the equipment may do so for short periods of time (no longer than 24 hours). Student borrowers must have a responsible member of the GSD faculty accept financial risk of loss or damage (equipment value is estimated at about $20,000). Both the faculty member and student borrower will be asked to complete a Sign-out Form. The scanner must be returned to a scanning TA or other member of Lab staff at an agreed-upon day/time. The scanner and its associated components must all be returned in undamaged working order. Failure to do so will result in replacement charges being billed, as applicable.
3D Scanner Hours
For the use of the Artec Eva and David SLS Scanners, refer to the TA Office Hours posted online and set up an appointment.
Check the Calendar to determine when Technical Assistants are on duty or whether the space is closed.
