Hardware
Artec Eva Sanner
This hand-held device is moved around an object to capture the scan. It is well suited for objects that are between the size of a toaster and a human. Multiple captures of the object can be aligned and refined in the associated software.
David SLS 3D Scanner
The David SLS 3D Scanner uses a projector and camera to bounce colored light off of an object to determine the distance of visible surfaces from of a calibrated plane. The object is rotated manually between the capture of individual stationary scans. Users must strategically capture scans that are able to be fused together to describe the solid. The scanner comes with software that can help to rotate and align the individual scans and fuse them together, but holes and other artifacts will very likely need to be repaired in other software, such as Geomagic Studio, in order to make a clean mesh and closed volume.
Your Own Mobile Device or Camera
Applications such as AutoDesk 123D Catch make use of the camera on your smartphone to create 3D models of objects.
