- Required TrainingStudents are encouraged to complete training as early as possible. All returning students, faculty and staff must complete the Fabrication Lab Refresher.
- Reserving Machine TimeReserve Machine Time using the FabJob App. Use a TMP folder for short-term file storage for walk-up use and consultations.
As a popular resource that is often unable to meet demand, the following policies are intended to help distribute Zünd cutter access to a greater number of individuals:
Walk-Up Use
- Walk-up use is intended only for materials and methods that can be completed with the Universal Cutting Tool, the Electric Oscillating Tool, the Universal Drawing Tool, and the Driven Rotary Tool. This essentially limits walk-up use to drawing, scoring, and through-cuts in materials like:
- Paper
- Bristol
- Foam Core Board
- Museum Board
- Chip Board
- Cardboard
- Textiles and Fabric
- (and similar)
- Methods and materials requiring other tooling may be turned-away from walk-up use and asked to instead reserve time, at the discretion of Zünd Technical Assistants (TAs) and Lab Staff.
- Walk-up use is intended for short jobs, requiring no more than 60 minutes of machine setup and use per day. Individuals requiring more time may be asked to schedule time instead or return another day.
- Walk-up use is conducted on a first-come, first-served basis. Only those present at the machine when it becomes available will be allowed use. Paper sign-ups and other form of informal lists or reservations will not be managed nor observed by Fabrication Lab staff and TAs.
- The newer, smaller Zünd is available for walk-up use only.
- Please save files to ZUNDTMP
Reserved Time
- The older, larger machine will be available through reservations made through the FabJob App.
- Reservations may be made up to one week in advance.
- Prepared files must be uploaded to the App at the time of submitting the job for review or schedule.
- Materials that require tools beyond those listed above for walk-up use require TAs to review files before scheduling.
- This process is facilitated through the FabJob App and Microsoft Teams. Please select “notify” upon confirmation that the job has been submitted in the App.
- Common materials requiring review prior to schedule (and will be turned-away from walk-up use) include:
- Sheet metal
- Plastic Sheet
- Wood
- Users are limited to two hours of scheduled time per day.*
- At the end of the semester an additional limit of three hours total time reserved is imposed.*
- *Time required beyond this limit may be accommodated at the discretion and availability of Zund TAs and Lab Staff.
- Individuals who have scheduled the maximum amount of time allowed may make use of walk-up time, but are asked to allow others who have not had an opportunity to use the Zund to have first priority.
- Scheduled time must be canceled or rescheduled at least two hours in advance of the appointment, via the App.
- Individuals must be present at the machine and prepared to cut within the first 10 minutes of their reserved time. Failure to be present or sufficiently prepared to make active use of the machine will result in forfeiture of the reserved time. This time will remain subtracted from their daily and total time limits. Repeat incidents of this type will result in the loss of ability to reserve additional time in the future.
- Any unreserved time may be used for walk-up use, according to the description above.
- TAs may make ‘after hours’ time available for either ‘walk-up’ or ‘reservable’ use. These hours will be visible to all through the App.
- TAs may reserve time for their own use ‘after hours’ and are subject to the same daily and end of semester time limitations as others.
Please either upload files to the FabJob App for reserved time, or to ZUNDTMP for walk-up use. The Lab will not be responsible for lost or damaged USB drives or any content saved thereon.
Zünd Cutter Hours
We have two Zünd Cutters available during Office Hours: one is for walk-up use (available for limited material types), the other can be reserved using the FabJob App.
