Gund L31 (Project Room)

The following equipment is available for use in the Gund L31 Project Room:

Abrasive Cabinet

Due to risk of silica exposure , please make sure the side door is firmly closed before turning the unit on. Similarly, turn-off the unit before opening the side door and removing the workpiece.

Flammable Storage Cabinet

All flammable materials should be stored in a flammables cabinet to prevent the start and spread of fire.

Materials that are corrosive may need special containment, as might materials that may be reactive with other items stored in the cabinet. Review Section 7 of a material’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for this information. Contact a member of the Fabrication Lab if you have any questions.

All materials placed in this cabinet should be labeled clearly with owner’s name and contact information. The Lab is not responsible for loss of property. Cabinets will be cleaned-out at the end of the year, with materials being discarded as hazardous waste, regardless of labeling.

Spray Booth

One spray booth with turn-table and removable table to accommodate taller items is located in L31. A compressed air connection for air brush use is located within it.

Wait for the light to indicate it is safe to spray.

Please use brown craft paper beneath the items you spray, to keep the surface clean for the next user.

Observe the applicable Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) when using the booth. Use of most materials, including spray paint, should be done with the use of gloves and safety glasses, to protect yourself from exposure. Leave items to dry on the shelves beneath the spray area of the booth, so that propellants, solvents, and other air contaminants are captured by the exhaust and removed from the room.

Dispose of aerosol cans in the designated waste container.

Work Tables

Please keep in mind that tables are shared by many. Clean up after yourself, disposing of materials and returning tools and other supplies. Do not store work on tables as this prevents others from being able to use them.

Liquid Waste Disposal

Let things like cement and plaster harden and then dispose of in the regular trash, rather than as liquid waste.

Very few liquids can be disposed-of in the drain. Use the large white barrels for materials like water used to clean paint brushes, plaster, clay, and cement.

Contact a member of Fabrication Lab staff regarding disposal of any hazardous waste, like solvents, resins, and paints.

Sink

Hot and cold water. Use the sink to wash your hands or obtain water for casting. The drain is very sensitive and cannot handle solids like sand, clay, cement, or other materials.

Please use a rinse bucket that is disposed of in the liquid waste barrel for washing of any brushes, rollers, or tools used with plaster or cement, rather than washing these items in the sink.

Emergency Eyewash and Shower

Use to flush eyes or cleanse body in the case of accidental exposure. Follow emergency response guidelines in the material’s Safety Data Sheet.

Spill Containment Kit

Used to contain spills, especially those that may be hazardous. Contact FMO in case of any spill (617-49)5-5560, and notify Lab staff immediately.

Gund L33

While primarily acting as the Zünd Cutter room, Gund L33 is also the home to:

Gund L40

Gund 518 (Spray Room)

The following equipment is available for use in the Gund 518 Spray Room:

Spray Booth

Four spray booths.
